What are the main responsibilities of an Assistant Accountant ?

Reporting to the Corporate Accounting Supervisor in this key role you will be primarily responsible for the effective operation of the processing and analysing of broker / dealer commissions for Global Commissions Accounting Group for International fund groups.

Operationally, you will be collaborating with others in the commission group, while liaising and supporting relationships with other members within the global finance organization.

Operational Responsibilities :

  • Download and format daily bank statements.
  • Record bank transactions in PeopleSoft general ledger.
  • Prepare weekly / month-end bank reconciliations for bank accounts.
  • Monitor daily cash balances to ensure no overdrafts arise.
  • Prepare quarterly funding and inter-account transfer requests to cover anticipated overdrawn accounts.
  • Analyze and prepare invoiced payments and record in PeopleSoft general ledger
  • Analyze and prepare bank receipts
  • Prepare and post AP payments, and AP FX movements
  • Reconcile monthly and quarterly automated payments.
  • Prepare and Post AP carried forward balances.
  • Prepare returns and monthly write offs.
  • Prepare daily CDSC receipts and monthly summary for Prepayments.
  • Periodic Responsibilities :

  • Participate in departmental projects and / or participate in cross-departmental projects.
  • Assist with maintenance of policies and procedures related to global commissions
  • Other Responsibilities :

  • Assist in Global Commissions initiatives as needed.

  • Education and experience :

  • An accounting / business tertiary education from a recognized university / college.
  • 1-2 years practical accounting experience. Prior public accounting experience viewed favorably.
  • CPA or equivalent preferred.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities :

  • Solid analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including applications within Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, Powerpoint).
  • Experience with automated financial systems, including the general ledger is required.
  • PeopleSoft experience viewed favourably.
  • Experience working with large volume of data and close attention to detail required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and analysis.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment consistent with department guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties including Company management and outside business associates.
  • Knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.
  • Problem solving and decision making :

  • Works under general supervision; work is reviewed for accuracy.
  • Develops solutions to a variety of problems; ensures solutions are consistent with organization objectives.
  • Additional desirable qualifications :

  • Work experience within the investment management industry and / or financial sector preferred.
  • Work experience with international exposure desirable.
