Job Description

The Medical Lead, Alzheimer’s Disease (Senior Manager) is an important member of the Alzheimer’s Disease Medical Organization and will drive the Medical strategy development and execution for the country for Alzheimer’s Disease in line with the Biogen worldwide medical strategy. This individual will ensure the affiliate medical organization is best positioned to drive and execute on the medical launch readiness plans. This is a role aligned with Biogen’s mission to be the leader in neuroscience.

The affiliate Medical Lead will collaborate with the Local & Regional Cross-Functional Teams to set the strategic direction for Alzheimer’s Disease Medical team at the affiliate level. He or she will be a hands-on, self-starter with entrepreneurial and cross-functional mindset, strong emotional intelligence who brings digital enthusiasm. He or she will be accountable for collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders, on an affiliate, regional and global level, to deliver appropriate execution of the medical strategy at the country level.

Reporting to Country Medical Lead, the successful candidate will collaborate with Country Medical Lead, global/regional medical teams, cross-functional stakeholders to determine strategic priorities and deliver appropriate execution of the medical strategy at the country level.

 Principal Accountabilities:

1. Providing Strategic Leadership and Ensuring Alignment & Optimal Execution

Build the affiliate medical strategy/plan and work closely with the local cross-functional team (e.g. Access) to ensure alignment and execution of the assigned targets in the AD plans. Ensure that the local AD Medical strategy is consistent with the ECP & Global medical and overall corporate strategy.

Strategic Leadership:

  • Responsible to provide input into local medical strategy for AD leveraging local insights that help prepare the anticipated introduction of new medicines, working cross-functionally with key internal partner functions to address the medical need in a country
  • Work closely with the ECP Medical Strategy & Execution Team to set and incorporate the ECP strategy into the AD local medical plans
  • Coordinates and ensures alignment of affiliate AD medical plan with regional/global medical plans by partnering with the affiliate team across functions to define, establish and execute a coherent local strategic plan that addresses patient needs
  • Maximize local contribution to the CEE cluster and ECP and ensures knowledge sharing and alignment, whether brand specific, cross-brand or phasing of project across teams.
  • Work closely with the ECP Field Medical Strategy & Execution Lead to set and incorporate the ECP field medical strategy into the AD local medical plans
  • Partner and collaborate with Regional AD Lead to ensure alignment of local field medical strategy with ECP strategy and support better understanding of current local needs.
  • Partner and collaborate local market access to define, establish and execute a coherent local strategic plan that addresses local external stakeholders (payers, HCPs, agencies) needs.
  • Collaborate with Governmental and Cooperate Affairs team to develop and implement a communication strategy for the affiliate
  • Collaborate with Clinical Country Lead on early phase trials in the AD pipeline, phase III, and later phase IV activities (including site and PI lead selection)
  • Develop and manage budgets for medical activities and provide input into the affiliate budgeting and planning process
  • Build local medical science expertise of the Biogen AD Portfolio
  • Facilitate sharing of best practices and knowledge across functions at the affiliate level and CEE/ECP countries medical teams

2. Medical AD Trust & Communication Partner

External liaison

  • Partner with local Key Medical Experts, internal and external stakeholders to develop and manage an external key medical experts network to ensure relevant and appropriate integration of accruing external medical expertise at the country level.
  • Collaborate with the local/ regional Medical Strategy & Execution Leads to build an affiliate integrated Medical Communication Plan for Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Partner and collaborate with ECP Medical to build high value-added continuous medical educational programs in AD for external stakeholders in the affiliate

Internal liaison

  • Manage information flow and ensure appropriate communication cascade the affiliate medical including cross-functional organization
  • Collaborate intensively with the ECP/CEE AD Medical Organization and coordinate communication and alignment with the affiliate AD Medical team to identify opportunities and challenges and support the team in addressing them. Coordinate with other groups as necessary
  • Represent local AD Medical Organization in regional/global AD forums, meetings, events or any instances as necessary and a as appropriate
  • Provide medical perspective and knowledge to other teams within the affiliate
  • Create a climate in which self-motivated individuals will aspire to higher levels of performance
  • Ensure exchange of medical information with other functions as appropriate for medical affairs and behave as a role model.

3. Finance Support

  • Act as primary interface between the local AD Medical and local Finance unit with regards to financial impact of strategic initiatives and investments, providing strategic financial analysis and input as required in budget process
  • Coordinate the AOP process for Alzheimer’s disease for the affiliate, in collaboration with the Country Medical Lead and local finance partners and other cross-functional members.
  • Coordinate, in collaboration with the local Finance Unit and Country Medical Lead, the finance quarterly reviews

Qualifications

  • 8-10 years related experience
  • Medical launch readiness experience
  • Must have strong leadership skills and acquired knowledge and skills/competencies to the degree expected at job level
  •  Experience in cross-functional teams without direct line authority and ability to lead and influence in the matrix
  • Scientific background and strong understanding of best in class operation organizations
  • Regional/Global experience in medical affairs organizations preferred
  • Experience in neurodegenerative diseases and/or Alzheimer’s disease preferred
  • Ability to work under pressure, in a fast-paced environment
  • Anticipates issues before they reach crisis point
  • Ability to learn on the fly / quickly identifies what’s important and what’s not
  • Must exhibit strong leadership skills and ability to cultivate strong internal/external network
  • Must have excellent analytical, strategic thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional team
  • Embrace Biogen’s elements & culture as new innovative and digital solutions
  • MD degree or other advanced degree
  • Travel (20-30%), field time up to 50%
