Systems Engineer II (IaaS / Cloud)- Enterprise Hosting Services

As a Systems Engineer, you will be a member of the Enterprise Hosting Services (EHS) team responsible for designing and implementing both internal and external customer-facing systems that run a variety of server operating systems on physical and virtual infrastructures both in company-owned data centers and cloud-hosted providers.
The key objectives of the EHS team are to analyze, design and implement the technical requirements of EHS projects, which include the selection, design, and management of Operating Systems, and Platforms (physical and virtual).
The position includes planning, requirements gathering, specification, design, and implementation of enterprise IT solutions, as well as the documentation and transition of operational processes required to support complex technical solutions.
The positions primary focus will be working with cloud vendors as well as looking at internal cloud solutions to provide a scalable and agile compute platform.
About the team :
You will be an integral part of a highly skilled team of geographically dispersed engineers responsible for providing a scalable compute platform that is fast, reliable and secure for hosted applications and services.
This team of engineers has managed over 4,000 servers (physical and virtual alike), which include a wide variety of application servers including DNS, web servers (IIS, apache, tomcat), and databases (MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle, etc) within or across system and enterprise boundaries.
The team’s primary goal is to increase productivity and security while decreasing cost, downtime and repetitive tasks.
Provide on-going engineering and Tier3 support of Cloud Services implementations (AWS, Azure, GCE, etc.), while acting as an escalation point for operations team and support issues;
Provide on-going engineering and Tier3 support of internal OpenShift environment and assist in operationalizing and educating the organization;
Coordinate and enhance internal OS deployment tools and processes;
Use our system resource utilization and monitoring tools to identify potential problem areas before they result in incidents;
Perform production system changes, remote software installations; patch software / OS; troubleshoot problems;
Work with other team members to monitor and review system capacity and design upgrade plans;
Manage small to medium size projects and provide technical input to the EHS team;
Apply business and technical analytical skills to analyze, identify, design, implement and develop comprehensive support processes to resolve complex business & operational issues;
Assist in the development of an EHS strategy that aligns with Akamai’s business objectives;
Remain knowledgeable of trends and advancements in information systems and information technology in order to assess the feasibility of implementing new services, systems, and technologies
Basic Qualifications :
3+ years experience as a Systems Engineer or Administrator including OS deployment, configuration, management and support;
3+ years experience with Cloud Hosting services (AWS, Azure, GCE), Openstack, etc.;
Experience in Server Architecture (Server Configuration, Security, Networking);
Experience with advanced familiarity with most operating system commands / utilities on Windows and / or Linux;
Experience with server hardening, application configuration, security, and providing release to production support documentation;
Experience with storage technologies (NAS / SAN and CIFS / NFS);
Fundamental understanding of DNS, DHCP, PXE boot, TCP / IP routing, VLANs, high availability networking;
Strong technical troubleshooting skills for both system performance and connectivity issues;
Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills; ability to effectively explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical staff including executives;
Strong attention to detail with excellent organization skills.
Desired Qualifications :
experience with Container services (Kubernetes, Docker preferred);
experience with programming technologies (Python, Powershell, Ruby);
experience with Server Orchestration in a global environment;
Experience with Cloud Orchestration and Service automation tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet);
Experience with IaaS; VMware (vCenter, vSphere), Rackspace;
Programming experience in shell or perl;
Good understanding of the ITIL frameworks along with the incident, problem and change management processes and procedures;
Willingness to take initiative and to overcome obstacles to achieve personal, organizational, and company goals;
Passion for pushing the limits of server technologies and their use in the workplace as a means to accomplish business objectives;
Good analytical skills and Project Management skills.
